BULBING ONIONS

Bulbing onions are the big onions with the papery skin that you use as sandwich toppers or sauté with carrots and celery for a soup base. At any given time you probably have at least one old onion at the bottom of the refrigerator drawer. It might even be starting to sprout! Those are the ones to experiment with because you know you’ll get good results. They’re already growing, so you just have to keep them growing.

Some onions are treated so that they won’t sprout. If the onion you try to regrow doesn’t sprout, it isn’t a failure of your horticultural skills. It was probably just the onion. Compost it, and try again.

Onions are sensitive to day length (actually, sensitive to night length), so when you plant an onion outside that you’ve saved from cooking, you could get interesting results. You might get a new onion bulb to form and you might not, because you don’t know which type of onion you’re starting with.
